Psychotherapist - Youth and Family Teams

PURPOSE AND SUMMARY:
Provides a full range of intensive in-home or office-based psychosocial rehabilitative and 
treatment services to consumers. Works collaboratively within team or individually.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Performs intake evaluation duties by screening and assessing emotionally and 
behaviorally impaired children and their families who are referred for services, and 
effectively engage these families to move them into change process to improve their 
family functioning and overall home environment. 
2. In conjunction with team members, develops and carries out plans for overall 
rehabilitation, treatment, and care for assigned children and families to address 
consumer and community safety concerns. Provides case consultations and performs
case coordination services with other involved agencies and service providers including 
participation in multidisciplinary staffing meetings for assigned families.
3. Documents services provided within the consumer’s case record in a manner spelled out 
in the clinic’s policies and procedures, and completes various forms required for 
insurance authorization, disability determination, program eligibility, service tracking.

 
ADDITIONAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Provides intensive in-home family psychotherapy treatment services for families 
assigned. The treatment model is intensive family systems-based therapy that 
encompasses mental health and drug and alcohol service interventions. 
2. Provides assessment and treatment to families referred to the Juvenile Sex Offender 
Program and coordinates overall treatment with program facilitators.
3. Manages overall caseload utilizing the principles and accountabilities of the 
Comprehensive Community Services (CCS) program as detailed in Health and Family 
Services DHS 36, including completion of all required paperwork. 
4. Provides crisis assessment, counseling, and referral services for assigned families, 
whether in person or by telephone, and completes required paperwork for billing 
purposes.
5. Participates in continuing education activities to enhance skill development and to keep 
current on new theory and practice to maintain relevant licensure
6. Addresses and resolves conflict and manages stress in a professional manner, including 
actively engaging in professional and personal activities which help mitigate the impact 
of secondary traumatic stress.
7. Applies Trauma Informed Care principles and practices, with a strong commitment to 
fostering a positive, healthy work culture. 
8. Performs other related duties as may be assigned.


WORK RELATIONSHIPS:
1. Reports to Youth Mental Health Supervisor.
2. Works professionally and in a collaborative manner with other department personnel and 
community resources.


REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, AND CERTIFICATION:
1. Master’s degree in social work, psychology, counseling, or a closely related human 
service field.
2. Qualified and licensed as a Wisconsin Licensed Clinical Social Worker, Professional 
Counselor, Psychologist, or Marriage and Family Therapist. Dual Substance Abuse 
Counselor certification preferred.
3. At least 3,000 hours of supervised experience.
4. Minimum of three years of supervised experience in family systems-based 
psychotherapy services. 
5. If hired as a Qualified Therapist in Training (QTT), must obtain full licensure as 
described above and supervised hours within 3-years from date of hire. An extension of
a QTT license does not meet the licensure requirement.
6. Requires qualification under Wisconsin Caregivers Law, Wisconsin Act 27.
7. Preferably knowledge of a county’s child welfare system and the impact the expectations 
of that system have on the delivery of therapy treatment services to like consumers of 
both child welfare and behavioral health systems.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
1. Knowledge of laws, regulations, and practices pertaining to Federal, State, and County 
public social services programs. 
2. Knowledge of resources and their availability and application to children involved in 
delinquency or suffering from abuse or neglect. 
3. Knowledge of the county child welfare system in Wisconsin and the impact that system 
has on the delivery of therapy services to consumers of child welfare and behavioral 
health systems.
4. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing, and to 
possess good organizational skills and follow through. 
5. Ability to accept and utilize supervision and direction while working within an agency 
team structure.
6. Working knowledge and understanding of Trauma Informed Care, preferred.
7. Ability to thoroughly assess the individual and family strengths, needs, and safety and 
risk factors with sensitivity to their past traumatic experiences, and incorporate these into 
an appropriate case/treatment plan that is developed in partnership with the 
individual/family. 
8. Computer skills including facility with Microsoft Office applications and ability to learn 
and use software.
9. Work hour flexibility is required based on case needs and may include up to three 
evenings per week. 
10. Access to a motor vehicle and commitment to meet and maintain the County’s 
automobile insurance requirements.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Ability to perform most work from a sedentary position.
2. Ability to freely move in the community (such as through possession of a valid Wisconsin 
Driver’s License, or other means) including access to a vehicle required.
3. Ability to access second floors in private homes for purpose of assessment and service 
provision required.
