This is a working supervisory position in the County Facilities Department providing day-to-day supervision of County campground store staff and operations including customer service and communications, for Veteran's Memorial and Goose Island. Using independent judgment and under moderate supervision, this employee is supervised by the Facilities Parks Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS 
Plans, directs and supervises the work of seasonal store staff, as well as volunteer campground hosts. Provides a work schedule for seasonal store staff.
 
Must have the ability to use discretion and independent judgement in order to make decisions often without input from the Director or other staff.
 
Opens and works in the campgrounds stores in the morning during the camping season providing store coverage while completing inventory and financial tasks.
 
Oversees and ensures efficient operation of campground business operations such as campground store, reservations, campground events and public promotion of these services.
 
Assists other department staff with purchasing and inventory management as well as point-of-sale systems for campground stores, including computerized and cash transactions and daily accounting.
 
Develops and maintains staffing patterns and internal policies and procedures that are necessary for the effective operations of the campgrounds.
 
Leads staff retention during non-camping season.
 
Event planning and coordination for campground during non-camping season.
 
Leads the recruitment, screening, and hiring of seasonal store workers and collaborates on design and delivery of seasonal store staff training.
 
Collaborates with the Facilities Director and Parks Manager in selection and hiring of Seasonal Grounds Laborers.
 
Assists in completion of the annual plan of operations for Goose Island Park and Campground.
 
Performs data analysis of other parks and campgrounds, during non-camping season, to ensure we are providing the best possible business model.
 
Performs administrative tasks related to the La Crosse County snowmobile program.
 
Rotates every third weekend as an Administrator on call, for after business hours issues, within the campground, during the 6 month camping season.

Physical demands: Frequently stands and walks around the Parks and Campground facilities. Pulls, pushes, bends, reaches, crouches, kneels, climbs and carries (up to 50 lbs.) intermittently throughout the day. Occasionally sits in office at desk, reading, writing, talking, hearing, using computer terminal, judgment and vision.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

  • Ability to learn and obtain knowledge of parks promotions, and of federal, state and local laws and regulations as they relate to campground and store operations.
  • Ability to effectively employ conflict resolution techniques.
  • Considerable knowledge and ability to efficiently use computer software to include Word, Excel and Outlook, with ability to create spreadsheets and reports for Facilities department.
  • Knowledge of and ability to utilize and troubleshoot radio, phone and internet technologies for communications with stakeholders.
  • Knowledge and efficiency in working with bookkeeping and budgetary procedures.
  • Ability to plan, direct and coordinate the activities of subordinates and to effectively handle training, disciplinary and other personnel matters.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees, officials and the general public.
  • Ability to give as well as understand and follow instructions, written and oral.

 

Training, Experience and Other Requirements

 

  • Associates Degree in Public Administration, Outdoor Recreation, Business Administration, Supervisory Management or Financial Management.
  • Preference for three years' experience in Customer Service
  • Preference for three years of supervisory experience with demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record to operate County vehicles.
  • May consider other relevant combinations of education and experience that provide equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
